"Dr. Miller, I Presume?" -- David/Paige 2005-2007

Paige: I don't want Bo to see us talking.
David: Why? He doesn't know about our connection to Spencer, does
he?
Paige: No, he doesn't, and I want to keep it that way.
David: Well, hallelujah. You can save your sermon for someone who's
not already in the choir.
David: (to Paige) You better put the coffee on the counter
because this has "binge" written all over it.
Paige: Is there something wrong?
David: You bet your next angioplasty there is.
David: (to Paige) Dr. Miller, I presume?
Paige: God, you know, I just thought I was done with Spencer when
I divorced him.
David: Yeah, the gift that keeps on giving, right?
David: (writing an article for "Craze") "Where the stars go
to lose their tan lines." Oh, you're good. David Vickers, you're the next
William Rudolph Hearst.
Paige: (correcting him) Randolph.
Paige: I know what I'd like to do.
David: Well, aside from removing large body parts through small holes,
what do you have in mind?
[Paige finds David drinking at the bar]
Paige: I thought you'd be here.
David: I'm anesth-- I'm anest-- I'm aneth-- I'm making myself feel
better with Long Island Iced Tea. Do you know how many different kinds of
booze are in this?
David: Paige, I've known you a long time. As a matter of fact, I remember
you in shoulder pads and leg warmers, and the only thing worse than my mullet
was your mullet.
David: So what did you do?
Paige: I can't tell you.
David: Why not?
Paige: It's too awful.
David: It's not like you killed somebody. Scratch that. It's not like
you made a pact with the devil and gave away your firstborn son. (catching
the look on Paige's face) Did you make a pact with the devil and give
away your firstborn son?
[David is shocked that Paige gave her and Spencer's son up for
adoption]
David: Why didn't you ever tell Spencer this?
Paige: And let him take my child away from me?
David: What, so you let strangers do that instead?
Paige: I told you something in confidence.
David: What confidence? Oh, that you had a son and you gave him up
for adoption?
Paige: A little louder, please? I don't think everyone in the restaurant
heard you.
David: (to Paige) I think you should just go ahead, let it
out, whatever it is. If you can't unload on your ex-brother-in-law, who can
you unload on?
Paige: Spencer is pulling our strings and ruining our lives, and I'm
sick of it! I'm so sick of it I could just scream!
David: Well, not any louder than I could. Look at us. This is ridiculous.
We're a couple of intelligent people, aren't we? I mean, you're a doctor.
You're chief of staff at a hospital, for crying out loud. And look at me.
I'm -- I'm an adult male sharing the same chromosomes.
Paige: Bo is involved now. He's involved in it, too.
David: Exactly. That's why if we tell the chief of police about this
murder we've been hiding for 20 years, he can help us get something on Spencer.
Wow, that's a really bad idea. I'm sorry, Paige, we're going to have to think
of something else.
David: Paige, it doesn't have to be like this. If you change your
mind, you know where I am. Actually, maybe you don't. I'm at the angle square
hotel, between the ice machine and the alley. Ice machine hasn't worked in
over two weeks.
David: (to Paige) You look awful. Not in general. Your blouse
looks nice. But your face looks really bad.
Paige: I was going to tell Bo everything.
David: Right.
Paige: About the man who died all those years ago.
David: Not everything-everything?
Paige: No, no, no, not -- not your part, but mine. It's just -- it's
getting out of control.
David: "Getting"?
David: Look, Paige, it shouldn't surprise you that Spencer's going
after Bo. He's been gunning for the Buchanans all along.
Paige: I wonder why.
David: He really has them for some reason. Could be anything. They're
a pretty hateable bunch. We can ask half the population of Llanview, myself
included.
Paige: Well, you're not out to destroy them.
David: Not lately.
Paige: I don't think that Todd should have to die for murdering Margaret
Cochran.
David: Well, everybody's got their own opinion about that one. Besides,
he's probably not going to die. Evangeline Williamson will probably appeal.
She'll get him life.
Paige: He doesn't deserve that, either.
David: Yeah, it does seem a little harsh. That whack job went after
his entire family.
David: If Spencer didn't kill Margaret, then what did he do?
Paige: Look, please just -- just forget this whole thing.
David: Oh, okay. Well, that should be easy. I'll just think of a few
of my favorite things -- puppies, fields of clover. Hey, you ever been to
an eastern European "dolphin" show?
David: (about Spencer) It was kind of fun, watching him get
raked over for a change?
Paige: There is nothing that's fun about this.
David: Nah, come on. It's a little fun.
David: (to Paige) Spencer doesn't know how much I know, but
he's really rattled like a nun caught skimming from the offering. I like
it, I've never seen him like this.
David: (to Paige) I do know this -- Spencer wanted Todd out
of the way and now Todd is out of the way via a double murder conviction/lethal
injection, and then you had something you needed to tell Todd that only you
know. You're engaged to the police commissioner, who happens to be a Buchanan,
and Spencer hates all things Buchanan. It's a six-degree sort of thing, or
seven or however many it took me to make the connection.
Paige: I've got a lot going on. Everything, I've got to juggle
everything and I've got -- got Spencer breathing down my neck. I have to
go. I'm sorry.
David: Wow. She's a worse liar than Adriana.
Paige: It's so complicated. This is why Spencer wanted me to be chief
of staff. He -- he phonied up all these documents. The D.N.A. testing on
the original body was done here at the hospital, and he made it look like
I switched the records so that would match Margaret. And Bo signed off on
it. My prints were on the baseball bat. I delivered the baby.
David: You're right. I'm very confused.
[David doesn't believe Paige's suspicion that Spencer killed Margaret
with a baseball bat]
David: You saw blood and a baseball bat, and you drew the conclusion
Spencer wanted you to draw.
Paige: Are you defending him?
David: Paige, Spencer's not that literal. You know that. I mean, a
needle full of potassium chloride, maybe. But a bloody baseball bat? Come
on, he wouldn't want to get something nasty on his suit.
David: So what we got to do, we got to find something on Spencer and
neutralize him.
Paige: Neutralize him?
David: Or destroy the evidence against us. I guess there's always
door number three, the status quo -- spend the rest of our lives cleaning
up messes we didn't make.
Paige: You said last night you didn't think Spencer murdered
anyone.
David: "Lately." I added that part, didn't I?
[David finds Paige crying]
David: Oh, boy. Crying again. What did Spencer do this time?
Paige: Oh -- I just -- I don't know how much longer I can live
like this.
David: Under Spencer's thumb is not a good place to be.
[David is mulling over Todd's offer to join forces against
Spencer]
David: Well, I guess there's only one option -- I join up with an
erratic, possibly homicidal lunatic with authority issues.
Paige: You don't think you can trust him?
David: Oh, no, absolutely not. He'd annihilate anyone that came between
him and Blair.
Paige: Yeah, and thanks to me, he knows that's what Spencer wants
to do.
David: Well, that hasn't exactly been a secret. So I guess my mission
is to try to get Todd to annihilate Spencer without getting caught in the
crosshairs. If I make it out of this alive, I'm going to change careers.
I've been considering library science.
Paige: You're very brave.
David: Who, me?
Paige: I'm going to try to be more like you.
David: No one's ever said that to me before. In fact, that's the first
compliment I've gotten in six months.
Paige: We were just discussing the Tsunami relief efforts in Southeast
Asia.
David: I had this dream that I was being swept away by this enormous
--
Paige: Wave.
David: How did you know?
[Later, after Spencer has gone]
David: Think my bit about the dream and the wave was good, don't
you? You think he bought it?
[Paige thinks Spencer murdered Todd and Margaret's child]
Paige: That baby is -- it -- it's dead. You and I cleaned the blood
off the warehouse floor.
David: Spencer is capable of a lot of things, but he usually thinks
the person on the other end is getting what they deserve. That little baby
didn't have time to do anything to him yet.
Paige: The old Spencer -- the man that I married -- he was manipulative,
he was arrogant, but -- but underneath it all, he was still a human being.
David: He doesn't have a soft, gooey center, Paige. You're giving
him too much credit.
[David thinks Todd and Margaret's child is in Thailand]
Paige: Why Thailand?
David: Well, if you were stuck with a supposedly dead baby from a
murdered mother and a convicted felon who couldn't die fast enough, and you
wanted to stash that baby somewhere on the planet, Thailand's about the best
place you could find to hide that thing.
[Paige and David watch Spencer and Blair together]
Paige: That looked like it went well.
David: I just wish she knew that her new boyfriend was trying to frame
half the town for murder.
Paige: David, did you hear what I said? The man you shot, the man
whose death I was responsible for, it was Michael and John McBain's father.
David: John McBain the cop?
Paige: John McBain the cop.
David: I'm dead.
[David comes to visit Paige in the hospital after her car
accident]
David: Which one of us had the worse week? I went looking for Todd's
kid, got arrested for murder. You danced the Lambada with an S.U.V. despite
your head wound, I think I win.
David: What are you doing out of bed?
Paige: I'm getting out.
David: So am I -- out of Llanview, that is. And if you're smart --
and I think you are, because you're a doctor and doctors have to pass hard
tests -- you'll leave Llanview, too.
David: I talked to John McBain, last night. I told him the whole story,
off the record, of course. Paige, the only thing I have ever wanted in my
handsome life is a clear conscience, and now I've got it. I am not going
to let the D.A. drag me in front of some cop-loving judge.
Paige: Listen, if you run now, you can never come back here. You'll
never see your friends or your family again.
David: I have no friends -- I'm David Vickers. And my family is about
as friendly as an earwig.
Paige: What about me?
David: Paige, John McBain is not going to breathe until you and I
are cozy in our little cells. I want a normal life without that tattoo-covered
gorilla cellmate who called me -- I'm not going to tell you what he called
me.
David: You're being naive.
Paige: Oh, so -- so facing your problems instead of running from them
-- that's naive?
David: It is naive if you think that prison is going to change your
life, Paige. Prison is gray, gray. Sort of a mousy brown. There's nothing
to live for in a place like that.
Paige: I never got a chance to tell you how happy I am that you're
free.
David: Yeah. How about that, huh? I've been living for 25 years with
massive guilt, and I didn't do anything. Well, nothing fatal, anyway.
Paige: So who'd you bribe to get in here?
David: I didn't bribe anybody. What's the point of free
food and drink if you have to pay someone to get in?
Paige: Oh, and you never pass up an opportunity for free anything,
right?
David: Women find thriftiness an attractive quality.
[David is surprised to see Paige at the hospital gala]
David: What are you doing here? If I lost my medical license, I'd
feel a little awkward about coming to a hospital gala.
Paige: I still have friends there. I just interviewed for a research
job there.
David: Oh, you did? Good for you. You know, there's nothing
embarrassing about being demoted.
Paige: I want Spencer to see me. I want him to know that even though
he destroyed my job, he didn't destroy my life.
David: Bully for you. I'm serious. Even your victory's a little
pathetic, don't you think? Spencer's still got everything he
wanted.
Paige: That's a temporary situation.
David: You know we're still going to have to listen to some sort of
"hooray for me, I'm king of the world" speech tonight. You got any tomatoes
in that purse?
David: It's over, Spencer. You got sloppy. And pretty soon, Blair
is going to drop you like a -- starts with a B.
Spencer: Bunch of bricks?
David: The other one.
Paige: Bad habit.
David: Right.
Spencer: I have nothing to fear from John McBain. Now, if you'll excuse
me, I'm going to go rescue my fiancée and start living happily ever
after.
Paige: Oh, yeah, your life is going to be a real fairy tale.
David: From the Brothers Grimm.
[David and Paige have learned that Spencer is going to be
arrested]
David: I figured maybe we could wait here, watch the parade as it
passes by on the way to the stockade.
Paige: What were the charges?
David: I don't know exactly, but if there's one thing I
know about John McBain and my adventures in Thailand with him, he is thorough.
He wouldn't have thrown the book at him yet unless he had all the evidence
he needed.
Paige: I made my choices. I'm not going to waste time regretting things
now.
David: Yeah, I know what you mean. If I thought about all of my regrets,
I wouldn't have time to eat. I like to eat.
Paige: Wow. Spencer was willing to let Todd die, just so he could
have a straight shot to Blair.
David: How many guys do you know would instigate a double murder and
an execution just to keep two people apart?
David: Paige? Hey, guess what. The -- the sirens we heard? That's
the cavalry bringing Spencer in right now. There's two news vans.
There's a whole gaggle of reporters behind him. It's a sight to
behold, so if we hurry -- come on.
Paige: What, you really want to be there?
David: I want a front-row seat.
Paige: So do I.
David: Then let's go!
David: I didn't think you had it in you -- nailing Spencer like
that?
Paige: It was 20-plus years of hostility speaking. But I'm surprised
you haven't done the same thing. It felt damn good to let go.
David: Brothers don't have that option.
Paige: You need to seriously rethink your relationship with Spencer.
He has used you your entire life and he's going to keep using you as long
as you let him.
David: Old habits die -- well, sometimes, they don't die at all, do
they?
[David has come to visit "Hugh" at the hospital]
Paige: David. What are you doing here?
David: I'm being a thoughtful uncle.
Paige: Are they absolutely sure that Spencer's not a Buchanan?
David: Oh, yeah, they're sure.
Paige: So everything he did to Bo's family was based on a lie?
David: Oh, Spencer's a bastard, but it has nothing to do with Asa
Buchanan. My brother is a self-made man.
Paige: (about Spencer) Now he's on trial for murder. Is that
hard for you to watch?
David: What, are you kidding? I want a front-row seat. I wouldn't
miss this for the world.
Paige: Would you like to stay with him while I go get something to
eat?
David: Do I get to wear one of those hats? They look good on me.
Paige: No, actually, just the gown. But you have to be careful not
to touch him -- it could cause infection.
David: I know better than to touch a burn victim, Paige.
David: (to Paige) Trial of the century. Interesting characters,
sex, violence, suspense -- I'm hooked. How about you? You look overjoyed.
[Paige informs David, Viki and Clint that David is a liver match for
Jessica]
Clint: Well, David? Are you willing to try to save our daughter's
life?
David: Well, let's see. Um -- I guess I can live on one. A lot
of people do, right?
Paige: That's your kidneys. No, you only have one liver, so we
would just be taking part of your liver -- the right lobe, and transplanting
it into Jessica.
David: Just one liver, huh? But just part of it.
Paige: Right, just the right lobe.
David: Just the right lobe of my liver? Well, I tend to only use the
left lobe, so -- ok.
Paige: We're going to have to do some tests, we're going to draw some
blood, and we'll get you prepped.
David: Right now?
Paige: Yes, David, right now.
David: I thought we were talking about the near to distant future.
Viki: No. No, Jessica's body is rejecting the first transplant.
This has to be done immediately.
Paige: Or by tomorrow at the latest.
David: Why not right now? I'm sure Clint has a buck knife in his
boot.
[Paige tries to reassure David while they wait for the results of his
blood work]
Paige: Try to relax while I get these down to the lab.
David: Last time I gave blood, they gave me a cookie.
Paige: When this is over, I will bake you a whole batch.
