How did you feel about what happened to your character when you left in 1996? "My character had alienated virtually everyone by the time I was leaving in '96. Near the end I was doing monologues to travel brochures, cutlery and a kitten. I would liked to have been sent off with a bang, but driving away in a car [to Florida with the mayor of Llanview] makes for an easier return than being crushed in heavy machinery."
What did you think of the way they brought David back onto the canvas? "I thought it was great. Everyone should be able to come back with their own henchman."
Was there a particular moment where you felt like you had slipped back into the character? "One day when David was plotting to get the Badhra diamond away from Dorian, I accidentally ran into the coffee table. It really took the thunder out of whatever I was saying. At that moment, I remembered that David Vickers isn't cool; he thinks he's cool. Then it all came rushing back to me."
Did you keep up with the show during the years away? "I would see the show on a monitor at the gym sometimes. I never heard the dialogue, but I noticed that everyone was growing their hair out. Except Bob Woods [Bo]. And Kassie DePaiva [Blair]. She cut all of hers off. It looked pretty hot."
Did you stay in contact with any OLTLers during your time off? "I've stayed pretty close with Nathan Fillion [ex-Joey] and Roger Howarth [ex-Todd]. Other than that, I'd bump into someone on a plane. Out of the blue, Kassie DePaiva sent me a quilt once. That was really nice."
Did you know when you returned that you'd be paired up with Robin Strasser (Dorian) again? "I just assumed that I'd be paired up with Dorian. I've always said playing David without Dorian is like playing with gasoline without matches: It's fun but it lacks showmanship."
