Let Them Entertain You (SOD 1/27/04)

The Entertainer: David Vickers
Laugh Track: David can always be counted on for a scheme or a one-liner. Recent antics include disguising himself and Dorian as a pilot and elderly passenger so he could sneak Dorian onto a plane; teaming up with Dorian to snag $30 million inheritance from the newest Cramer, Paul, who he calls a "dimpeled do-right"; flirting with Dorian, Lindsay and his ex, Kelly; telling Dorian that her estate, La Boulee, "sounds like creme brulee." In 1995, while David was married to Dorian, she managed to make it look like she was committing adultery by tying him to a bed, then taking photos of herself (in disguise) with him.

Cheerleader Tuc Watkins
Was David originally meant to be a comic character? "No. He was supposed to be this dark, mysterious heir-apparent to the Lord fortune. One day, I fell down the stairs and everyone laughed. I think that's when David's character jelled for me: 'Oh, he thinks he's dark and mysterious, but he's really a buffoon.'"

Were you funny in your audition? "I screen-tested with Robin Strasser [Dorian] and was supposed to kiss her. It was supposed to be a surprise [for her]. By the time I got there, five or six guys had already gone, so she resisted. I decided not to kiss her and laughed at her instead. I guess it worked!"

Do you and Robin ad-lib? "We do some tweaking. Beacuse a lot of our stuff skews toward humor, the writers don't always have the time to get the dialogue they'd want for us. So, we work out our own one-liners."

Fans loved the scenes of you and Robin in the airport, when you were in disguise. "It's always funny to see our characters dressed up as other characters. I think David and Dorian enjoy doing it, because it leads them to think, 'Hmm, maybe we should try some role playing. That would be exciting at home.'"

Would you want to see David in a serious relationship? "I'd like to explore that with him, but it's difficult when the most important person in your world is yourself. For one reason or another, he's a con man, he's a survivor, so he has a hard time trusting anyone."
